90s Trends I’m wearing in 2020
Just a quick scroll through my Instagram is all you need to see my love of 90s fashion and culture. Every season it seems like there’s always some sort of new 90s revival trend, from new takes on the slip dress to everyone’s favorite crop top. 90s nostalgia is getting more and more popular thanks to celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Baldwin bringing their street style A-game. I’m always excited to see how I can mix these retro trends with my modern wardrobe. As we get ready for fall, I wanted to share my favorite throwback 90s trends and how give them a 2020 twist. Here are a few of the 90’s trends I’m wearing this year.
TUBE SKIRT SETS
Is there anything more 90’s than a tube top or tube skirt? From SJP to Aaliyah to Rachel Green on Friends, all our favorite 90s icons loved their tube skirt outfits. I’ve been seeing the tube skirt pop up at some of my favorite retailers, especially as a set with a matching top (my favorite way.. especially in all black). You can find some really cute 90s inspired midi tube skirts at Revolve or Asos.
ONE SHOULDER TOPS
One shoulder tops have been huge this summer from easy tank tops to active wear to swimwear. I’ve been wearing this trend a lot with denim and even sweatpants since it’s such an easy way to look more put together. Thankfully, I don’t see any signs of the one shoulder trend slowing down yet! Love how sexy and easy it is. For fall, simply pair your favorite one shoulder tops with jeans or leather pants and layer a chunky knit or blazer over it!
COMBAT BOOTS
It’s no secret that combat boots are basically my favorite kind of boot. Combat boots are my go to for transitioning my wardrobe from summer to fall and adding some 90s grunge to a super girly outfit. They have quickly become one of my closet staples over the last few years because of how versatile they are and because they can be worn in almost any kind of weather. They NEVER go out of style. Trust me. For a total 90s inspired look, pair a floral mini dress with chunky sole combat boots and an oversize denim jacket.
HIGH-WAISTED MOM JEANS
The high rise mom jean was everywhere in the late 80s and early 90s and most likely our moms owned a few pairs. I remember thinking how ugly they were when I was younger. Who would have thought now I’d be so obsessed. I don’t use that word “obsessed” lightly by the way! The mom jean has a relaxed fit, a high rise and a straight leg and most importantly– is super comfortable. Of course, 2020 has some mom jean updates for us like modern distressing, a tighter fit around the waist and a flattering booty lift. Mom jeans are my favorite for a casual jeans and tee look or dressed up with heels and a bodysuit.
FLANNEL
A major trend in the 90s for both men and women was the flannel shirt. It became super popular thanks to punk rock icons like Kurt Cobain (of Nirvana, for those youngsters out there). Today, you’ll see girls wearing oversized flannels open with a super crop top and loose fitting jeans for an off duty, edgy vibe. My flannels (or Johns!) always make an appearance in my fall wardrobe with combat boots.I also love a flannel wrapped around my tight bike shorts and sports bra athleisure looks. Here are a few cute options:
