Fall/Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Fall/Winter Capsule Wardrobe

There’s nothing more exciting than fall and winter fashion. I love summer fashion too, but every summer the trends vary a bit more and you can’t help but feel like you “need” everything. Fall and winter fashion makes it easier to stick to quality over quantity and really embrace a “capsule wardrobe”. A capsule wardrobe is basically a mini collection of your favorite and most versatile items. These are the pieces that survive the trends, you can wear them a ton of different ways and most importantly, you love to wear them! Here’s my list of go-to fall/winter items I wear over and over.

ALWAYS CLASSIC SHOES

Colder weather calls for covered toes. My four can’t-live-without shoe styles are black combat boots, white sneakers, black booties and neutral booties. I seriously live in these four and could probably style them a hundred different ways. When picking shoes for your capsule wardrobe or even if you’re looking to buy a new pair this season, always make sure they’re comfortable, made to last and are a classic color!

BLACK COMBAT BOOTS

WHITE SNEAKERS

BLACK BOOTIES

NEUTRAL BOOTIES

KEY LEATHER + SUEDE PIECES

Leather (& faux leather) and suede are a definite must for fall and chances are your capsule wardrobe will have a few staple pieces. My first and most important one is a leather jacket, closely followed by the suede moto jacket. I wear these two a ton and they’re pretty much “seasonless”. I even wear them when it’s chilly at night in the spring and summer! The blank NYC suede jackets are a staple and I bust mine out almost every single year. Two other capsule worthy leather pieces are faux leather leggings or trousers (depending on your style) and a leather blazer.

GO TO LAYERING

It’s all about the layers. No matter where you live, it’s important to have some signature  layering pieces like a high quality black turtleneck, a black silk slip dress, a basic crew neck tee (in black and white) and a sleeveless bodysuit (in black and white too)!  You may have these pieces already covered, but in case you don’t, here a few amazing layering pieces you’ll wear a bunch. I like to also always have a graphic tshirt on deck but I didn’t add that here because its such a personal thing depending on what graphics you like.

VERSATILE OUTERWEAR

Other than a leather and suede moto, you’ll need a few additional outerwear pieces. First, an oversized check blazer. From  business meetings to date night, you’ll be surprised how much you wear it! Next, coats. Every girl needs a good trench coat and a warm camel coat. Depending on the weather, these are two pieces  you’ll always alternate between. And lastly, the chunky knit cardigan. You can’t go wrong with black, but given we’ll all already be wearing a ton black,  a beige or white is the perfect choice. Love all these versatile pieces because you can really style them to fit your personality.

THE PERFECT DENIM

Now that we’re probably retiring the denim cut offs for the rest of the year, it’s time to talk about the ONE pair of denim your closet needs. A high rise, straight leg blue jean. They’re classic, effortless and beyond versatile whatever your plans are. If you’re looking for your perfect pair, some of my favorite denim brands are Boyish, Levis, Agolde and Grlfrnd.

A FOREVER HANDBAG

When it comes to handbags, you’ll never regret a classic handbag that can be used day or night. Designer bags are always a big purchase, so it’s important to find a bag that will transcend whatever trend is in the spotlight. One of my favorite capsule wardrobe purchases is my little black Saint Laurent cross-body. It’s one of their classic styles the brand keeps making year after year so I know it’s a good investment.

TIMELESS ACCESSORIES

Even jewelry and sunglasses are part of a capsule wardrobe because it can be just as easy to be sucked into the accessory trends. I love to keep it minimal and always have jewelry that will go with absolutely everything. For jewelry, the two pairs of earrings I wear the most are a pair of small gold hoops and larger, chunkier pair of hoops. I also love a gold chain necklace to add some flair to my fall/winter basics. For sunglasses, my all time favorites are ray-bans or a classic black pair!
